Akosua Busia best known for her role in 'The Color Purple' as Nettie Harris is a multi-talented actress, writer, and director. She is also well-known for her other works in 'Tears of the Sun' as Patience, 'Low Blow' as Karma, and 'CBS Schoolbreak Special' as Brenda.

Education & Alma Mater

Busia was born and raised in Ghana but her family values the quality of education so she was sent abroad to study. She attended London's Central School of Speech and Drama on scholarship as she was interested in acting. 

Then she got enrolled at the University of Oxford, in England from where her father also got graduated.

Prime Minister Father

The 'Mad City' actress is the daughter of Kofi Abrefa Busia and late Naa Morkor Busia. Kofi is the former prime minister of Ghana from 1969 to 1972 and is also the prince of the royal family of Wenchi, a subgroup of the Ashanti. 

Busia was three years old when her father became the prime minister of Ghana.

Has One Sister 

The director of a video 'Ascension Day' has an older sister name Abena Busia, a writer, poet, feminist, lecturer, and diplomat. She got her Bachelor degree from St. Anne's College, Oxford, in 1976, and a D.Phil. at St. Antony's College in 1984. 

Abena was a professor at Rutgers University but she is now Ghana's ambassador to Brazil since 2017, with accreditation to the other 12 republics of South America.

She was blessed with two older brothers named Yaw Busia and Owusu Busia who passed away at their childhood. 

Former Husband: John Singleton

Busia was married to John Singleton, a film director, screenwriter, producer, and actor. Singleton is best known for his directed movies like 'Boyz n the Hood', '2 Fast 2 Furious', 'Four Brothers', 'Poetic Justice', 'Baby Boy', and so on.

The former pair got married on October 12, 1996, but got divorced after a year of their marriage. The entertainment website, Bossip claimed that Busia filed for divorce claiming she didn't receive any payment for the movies Shaft, Woo, and Rosewood. 

However, the movies were released after they got divorced. The ex-pair has given birth to one child from their marriage.

Bessie from 'Native Son' gave birth to a daughter named Hadar Busia-Singleton from her marriage with John Singleton. She was born on April 3, 1997, and is Actor known for her work in 'Ascension Day' (Video) as Daisy and 'Tears of the Sun' as Amaka.

Hadar has an Instagram account with the username 'hadsy' where she has written "Actor, tweeb & animation enthusiast. Ralph Bakshi stan." in her bio.

Started Her Acting Career Since She Was 16

Busia started her acting career since she was 16, but her first screen debut was from a movie named 'Ashanti' as The Senoufo Girl in 1979. Since then she has acted in more than thirty movies, series, TV movies, mini-series, and short videos.

Busia is familiar by her works in 'The Final Terror' as Vanessa, 'A.D.' (TV Mini-Series) as Acte, 'Late Starter' (TV Series) as Nicki, 'Badge of the Assassin' (TV Movie) as Ruth, 'Mad City' as Diane, and so on. Her last work was in a short video 'Ascension Day' as Cherry in 2007, as since then Busia hasn't been active in the film industry.
